General Information for Artists

Submission

We encourage artists to send their demos, but keep in mind that our resources are limited and it may not be reviewed if it comes unsolicited. A professional press kit has the greatest likelihood of being reviewed, but most often we find our talent by keeping our eye on the electronic music scene. Naturally, the best way to get noticed is to build a strong following of people who believe in you.

How it works

You become a Sonic Masterworks artist by getting on the release schedule. If it is your first time on the release schedule, you must have original material that is ready to go into mastering. In most cases, assuming that the recording is of very high quality (at least 24 bit, 96kHz resolution) Sonic Masterworks will take care of the mastering for you if necessary. This allows us to ensure that the recording meets "red book" specifications and is of the highest and most pristine quality. If your material has already been mastered, it must meet our standards of quality. If it does not, we may ask for the original files so we can re-master it to specifications. In some cases, we may ask for the original DAW file (Pro-Tools or Ableton Live, for example) to make adjustments to individual tracks within the mix if we discover problem areas during mastering. We generally prefer to fix problems in the track mix itself rather than in mastering.

Releases

A track that is released on Sonic Masterworks cannot then be released on another label without the other label paying a re-distribution fee, in which case Sonic Masterworks releases all rights to distribute that track to the new label. The artist is never restricted from releasing and distributing other original material or remixes on another label simultaneously. In fact, we encourage that kind of initiative as long as it doesn't affect your ability to meet your release dates with Sonic Masterworks or jeopardize the credibility of your brand.

Release Schedule

Release schedules are made in 6-month increments at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters of the calendar year. A new release schedule takes effect at the beginning of the 1st and 3rd quarters of each calendar year. As an example, the release schedule for Q1 and Q2 of 2015 will be determined at the close of Q3 2014.

Marketing & Promotions

Marketing plans vary significantly for each artist based on where they are at in their career. At the close of each quarter, we assess each artist's brand equity, which is measured by a statistical analysis of public influence. We also release sales figures to the artist at the close of each quarter and assess the artist’s sales performance, making adjustments to the marketing plan for that artist as necessary.
